Oh What A Night: CLIPSE/COOL KIDS Live at St. Andrews 8/23

Saturday, September 5, 2009 0

Thanks to a lovely lady who goes by the moniker of Six Two I had the opportunity to go to the Clipse/ Cool Kids concert with Special Guest RoSpit. I haven't been to alot of concerts but in the few I've seen I can definitely say this was one of the best concerts I've been to. I know it's cheesy but the energy was crazy. It was the firt time I heard Rospit and I must say I was impressed and when Marvwn stepped out it was crazy. The Clipse were excellent as well. They're clearly underrated and I will be checking for them in the future. And of course the Cool Kids were awesome as well and they happened to bring a fine chick on stage by the name of Tennille :D well enough of my rambles just check the pics.

Movie Night: The Virgin Suicides

Tuesday, August 4, 2009 0

The Virgin Suicides released in 2000 is the directorial debut of Sofia Coppola and stars Kirsten Dunst and Josh Hartnett. Based on the book by Jefferey Eugenides, the film tells of the suicides of five sisters in Grosse Pointe, MI during the 1970s. This dramatic tale is sure to engage and pull you into a world of teen angst and coming of age.

Detroit Style: Donyale Luna

In this segment of Detroit Style I won't be highlighting a designer from Detroit, on the contrary today's highlight will be on Donyale Luna often hailed as the first black model. Born Peggy Anne Freeman in Detroit, Michigan, Donyale Luna rose to fame in the late '60's and early '70's. At 6'2'' the slender beauty was known for her trademark blue contacts and blonde wig. Although she broke down barriers for many African Americans she didnt identify with the race. In fact, she identified with norace in particular. She hated the term "Black Model". In her eyes she was just a model. Not only was she a model but she also dabbled in the acting realm. Starring mostly in Andy Warhol films she also can be seen in Skidoo starring Groucho Marx. Sadly her rise to stardom was cut short in 1979 after a fatal overdose.

Titus "Baatin" Glover 1974-2009

Titus "Baatin" Glover, a founding member of Detroit-based Hip Hop Group Slum Village, was found dead on Friday July 31, 2009. Known mostly for their hit song Selfish produced by Kanye West and featuring John Legend, Slum Village was preparing for the release of a new album this fall. Baatin leaves behind two children Michael Majesty Ellis, 9 and Aura Grace Glover, 1. All prayers go to the family in this trying time.

Rolling With The Homies - Wasabi Korean and Japanese Cuisine

Thursday, July 30, 2009 1

When most people in around the metro area think of sushi they think of places like Little Tree in Royal Oak or Crave in Dearborn. Not many people think sushi restaurants or at least any good ones exist in the city itself. Fortunately for us they do. One in particular is called Wasabi and it's located in the lobby of the Park Shelton on Woodward. Conveniently located in Midtown Detroit Wasabi is next to the DIA and in close proximity to Wayne State University. Not only is the food good but Monday-Friday during lunch you can get Sushi lunch combos that start at $9.95. Today I tried the Roll #2 combo and I got six pieces each of the Shrimp Tempura, Cucumber Roll, and California roll plus Miso Soup and Salad. For only $9.95 I'd say that was a heck of a deal. An additional plus is the fact that if you join their mailing list @ www.wasabidetroit.com they'll send you monthly coupons for 10% and 15% off of lunch and dinner respectively. So next time when you have a hankering for eel or a good California Roll hit up Wasabi. You'll be glad you did.

The 4th Annual House Music Picnic

As we all know Detroit is the hometown of House and Techno music. On August 28, 2009 the 4th annual House Music Picnic will be held at Belle Isle. Apart of the Backpacking For Success program put on by SCPMichigan , the event hosts a variety of Famous House and Electronic DJ's from around Detroit and the world . This year's guest DJ's include Aaron Carl, Rick Wilhite, Eric Johnson, Todd Jit Wiggins, Norm Talley, Shake, Bruce Bailey, Reggie Harrell, and many more. It's a fun time with food fun and of course music not to mention it's charity. Just bring a bookbag and/or school supplies and be eligible for a tax deduction. I will be in attendance at the picnic helping the Chair of the organization, who also happens to be my cousin Judy Shelton. Hope you all can make it out and support a good cause!

You Had Me At Hello

Hi my name is James and I'm from Detroit.

Hi James!

For many people Detroit is nothing but a city filled with violence and poverty. For me Detroit is a city filled with culture and the potential to be more than you ever thought. Just like me, Detroit is on the rise and I plan to chronicle that journey through this blog. As time rolls, my goal is to introduce you to exciting things happening in Detroit, whether it's new local Fashion lines or the best restaurants. My primary goal is to showcase things in the city itself but I do not discriminate against the metro area so if you see some thing that should be highlighted send it to me @ jaymherriotte@gmail.com and don't forget to follow me on twitter.com/jimmy_mikey.
